Planning Your Family Photos!
We wanted to feature Molly & Matt’s family portraits as a way to help you the next time you are planning your family photo session.
We met Molly & Matt when we were asked to photograph them for the cover of the community magazine, Country Club Living for the city of Denver. N2 Publisher, Kate Haughey put us in touch with Molly & Matt and we were thrilled to work with this beautiful young family. We had so much fun!
Here are three things, in no particular order, to consider when planning your family portraits!
Time of Day
At Kate Schwindt Photography, we photograph our portraits (for families and high school seniors) either in the morning or in the evening. We choose a time close to sunrise and sunset so the light is softer. This prevents harsh shadows and creates more even lighting!
Coordinating Family Outfits!
This is probably the single most frequently asked question we receive from our clients as we plan their family portrait sessions. So, we’ve met with experts in fashion and owners of local boutiques to get their insight! We created our own KSP Family Style Guide. If you email us at email@example.com and sign-up for our monthly newsletter, you will be sent this complimentary PDF magazine for you to reference!
Things to plan for:
Don’t be too matchy-matchy. Instead, pick a color and have your family wear that color alternating between tops and bottoms or as an accent color.
Texture in your clothes adds depth and dimension to your photos, instead of a shirt or dress all one color with no design or pattern to the material.
Layers are always fun and a great way to bring out your personality and style!
Location Location Location!
We are so fortunate to have a studio in Littleton where we can photograph our family portraits. Though most of our clients choose a location that is outdoors, we have had a few that decide they wanted in-studio family photos! Check out this video slideshow of a recent in-studio session!
When you consider the location, take the advice of your photographer. At KSP we have several locations that fit your family’s style and personality. We also hold permits to several locations that aren’t readily available to the public for photo sessions.
One of our favorite things to do is come to your home if that is something you would like. It also makes it easier if you have extended family joining in on the photos! Molly & Matt decided to have us come to their home for their family portraits. We utilized everything, from the front of the house, to the inside the house and the back yard. We even had their dog join us for a few!
Don’t Worry…and Don’t Wait!
We hope this blog helps ease your worry about planning your next family photo session. The most important thing is to do them! Don’t wait because they will be grown before you know it. Or maybe they are all grown up and it’s just been a while since you’ve had everyone together. Either way, schedule the session and show up with a smile…it will be so worth it!
